MIDNIGHT EXPRESS™ Redbud

Zone: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Exposure: Full Sun Height: 20-30' Width/Spread: 10-20'

This specimen tree provides more than one season of interest! Midnight Express® redbud has you covered from spring ’til fall with its fabulous color show. It starts with an impressive number of bright pink, pea-shaped blooms lining each branch in the springtime. From there, it grows large, heart-shaped foliage with dark burgundy coloring that shifts to a dynamic show in summer with emerald green hints. The leaf coloring is the same as or a bit darker than Black Pearl™ redbud. It grows in a more upright manner and fills out faster than Forest Pansy redbud. The most dramatic show is saved for fall when the interior foliage lights up with butterscotch yellow coloring while the exterior leaves remain burgundy and red. You won’t be able to take your eyes off this native, color-changing tree!

Why grow Midnight Express redbud?

Light: Requires 6+ hours of direct exposure to sunlight each day to get the best foliage color and highest flower count.

Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil, but will perform well in a range of soils – alkaline, acidic, clay.

Water: Average water needs, but does best in soils that are moist. A layer of mulch will help

Fertilizing: If desired, fertilize in early spring using a granular (not liquid) fertilizer formulated for woody plants, like a rose or tree fertilizer. One application a year is sufficient in most areas. However, if you are starting with a very small plant, you may wish to fertilize monthly through late July to encourage more rapid growth.

Pruning: Not recommended. If any shaping is desired, prune in the wintertime while it is dormant.

Other: From a seed source in Wisconsin, so it’s more cold hardy than other options.
