Spring Grove® arborvitae might be the largest shrub in the line of Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs, but it has a lot to offer! It’s a fast-growing selection of the beautiful, striking North American native Western arborvitae (Thuja plicata). That makes it an ideal choice for planting a lush privacy hedge that creates a storybook setting for any home, business, museum, or church. Though Western arborvitae aren’t quite as hardy as their Eastern counterpart (Thuja occidentalis), they do show better deer resistance, so with protection, may be a better choice as for an evergreen hedge for those who struggle with deer damage to their plants and landscapes.
Why grow Spring Grove arborvitae?
Light: Full sun (6+hrs/day) to part sun (4-6 hrs/day)
Soil: Any well-drained soil will do
Water: Average water needs
Fertilizing: Nothing special required; apply a granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants in early spring if desired
Pruning: Not required; Spring Grove naturally grows into a pyramidal shape. As a young plant, it may be trimmed in late spring if desired, but will soon grow so large that pruning to shape becomes impossible without specialized equipment.
